There are full-page ads throughout telling you to go to a certain website to get free audiobooks. And the illustrations are terrible and completely unrelated to the story. The publisher, however, has included odd illustrations that do NOT match the story at all. I was hoping to find a copy of this work of fiction that includes a few illustrations to reward my 5 yo as we read this together . Every few pages we see a pic of a man sitting in a temple or of a group of people talking --pics that have nothing whatsoever to do with the storyline. We are like "what?!" Austin -- Great story, lousy rendition : This is a wonderful story about three children and their mother who gracefully handle their new life when the children's father suddenly disappears. However, the narrator does a truly AWFUL job of the British accents. The children and their parents are from the British upperclass, but she makes them sound like a cross between a Cockney and someone from Maine. Fortunately the story is good enough that I wanted to hear it all the way to the end, but that didn't prevent me from gritting my teeth through most of it. Worth a read and a watch. the series may still be on Youtube. : Beautifully illustrated in black and white children's style book with complete story (versus shortened versions). It is an older version of this 1906 story when first penned.. it eventually was a series on TV (back in the days of Black and white) and subsequently made into a movie. It is a delightful story centered around a family driven to poverty by alleged treasonous activity of the father -which was found to be untrue. The plot takes place in England and incudes adventures of three children trying cope with the misfortune of their fate as a result of their father's imprisonment. It is a delightful story and apart from the historical setting of the events (which are intriguing in themselves) the story could be a modernized and still be a relevant classic.
